2ND BACHILLERATO

We learnt in class the different sociocultural varieties and idiomatic registers of English. In short, we learnt the main characteristics of Spanglish.  First of all, my students read a text in English about Spanglish and they answered some questions about that. Then, they were divided into different groups to study in depth Spanglish, and the different cultural manifestations. Some groups created powerpoint presentations and this is one example:

2ND BACHILLERATO

On the 19th January, we were at the Albacete auditorium watching a play called “ Shakespeare in Love”. Many of you told me you enjoyed a lot and asked to I told you the tongue twister (trabalenguas). But I´m not very good at it.  Now, you can practice it.

Three witches watch three Swatch watches. Which witch watch which Swatch watch?

If you like tongue twisters, you may practice.

ACTIVITY

Leonard Cohen is a Canadian poet, novelist and also a singer-songwriter, He wrote a song called “Take this waltz”.

This is based on a poem by Lorca. Can you tell me its name? During the first moments of the video, Leonard Cohen speaks about this song. Can you answer these questions?

  1. What did Leonard Cohen find in a bookstore in Montreal?
  2. What is his opinion about what he found?

If you want  to know more things about Lorca, you can watch this interesting video where you can see Vicente Alexandre talking about Lorca and images of  the New York he found (near the Crash). He was fascinated about Harlem (Do you remember Lorca´s drawing “ Urban Perspective”?). In New York, he studied English at the Columbia University and he met Hart Crane.

ACTIVITY

The Dawn

   by Federico García Lorca

The New York dawn has

four columns of mud

and a hurricane of black doves

that paddle in putrescent waters.

The New York dawn grieves

along the immense stairways,

seeking amidst the groins

spikenards of fine-drawn anguish.

The dawn comes and no one receives it in his mouth,

for there no morn or hope is possible.

Occasionally, coins in furious swarms

perforate and devour abandoned children.

The first to come out understand in their bones

that there will be no paradise nor amours stripped of leaves:

they know they are going to the mud of figures and laws,

to artless games, to fruitless sweat.

The light is buried under chains and noises

in impudent challenge of rootless science.

Through the suburbs sleepless people stagger,

as though just delivered from a shipwreck of blood.

Translated by Stephen Spender and J.L. Gili

The following drawings are based on this poem. My students (2nd Bachilllerato) read this poem and then, each of them drew his/her interpretation of it.
